This in part explains the company's desire both to add more Polish distilleries to its portfolio (in a bid to create production synergies and reduce costs) and to expand opeartions outside Poland, notably to Lithuania. In Poland, for example, Belvédère is one of the bidders for the country's largest distillery, Polmos Bialystok, whose privatisation is expected to be completed in the early part of 2005. The distillery, which makes the popular Absolwent and Zubrowka brands, is expected to attract considerable interest, however, with US-based CEDC already in the running. The move into Lithuania, meanwhile, began last year when the French firm acquired the former Lithuanian state-owned vodka distillery Vilnius Detige. The proximity of Lithuania to Poland allows for significant production synergies, the group said, and the company is likely to look for further acquisitions there to create greater economies of scale - and offset its reliance on the weak Polish market.
